Meta can assign a data source category to the websites and apps that send it data through its Business Tools, such as the Pixel or the Conversions API. Health and wellness is one of the categories that can come with data sharing restrictions. It covers sources tied to medical conditions, health statuses, patient and provider relationships, access to health records, or health-related products and services, such as a pharmacy, a telemedicine platform or a wellness tracker. The restrictions go from core setup, which strips custom parameters and URL paths, to blocking some mid and lower funnel events, up to a full block of all events in some or all regions. Can you get out? If you categorized the source yourself, you can edit the category in Events Manager. If Meta assigned it and you think it is wrong, you can request a review from the dataset settings, and Meta emails its decision. You cannot edit a Meta-assigned category yourself.
TL;DR
- Meta can put a website or app that sends it data in the health and wellness category, which can restrict data sharing.
- Restrictions range from core setup to blocking some lower funnel events, up to a full block of all events.
- Self-assigned category: edit it in Events Manager. Meta-assigned: request a review, and Meta emails the decision.
- If the restriction stays, Meta suggests upper funnel events or Awareness, Engagement and Traffic objectives.
- Adwize can’t lift a Meta restriction, but it explains what your restricted data still tells you.

What are Meta’s health and wellness restrictions?
They are limits on the data a website or app can share with Meta. Meta’s systems look for information that is not allowed under its Meta Business Tool Terms, including sensitive information. To do that, Meta may assign a category to each data source based on its topics and the products or services it offers. Health and wellness is one of those categories.
A category can come with additional data sharing restrictions, specific to some countries or regions or applied globally. When Meta decides to limit or fully restrict a source, it says it informs you by email and through notifications in Meta Events Manager.
Meta also stresses that you remain responsible for your integration and the data you share. Its detection is not a substitute for your own compliance checks.
What counts as a health and wellness data source?
Meta defines it as a source associated with medical conditions or specific health statuses, provider and patient relationships, services to access personal health information, or health-related products and services. Its examples: a patient portal, a wellness tracker, a telemedicine platform, a pharmacy, a health insurance marketplace or a condition-specific support group.
It is not the only sensitive category. Meta’s list also includes financial services, unsuitable content, politics, race, religion, sexuality and gender identity, nationality, trade unions, personal hardship and economic vulnerability. Meta notes that the list is not exhaustive and may evolve.
Example. An online store that sells vitamins next to sports clothing may be categorized because of its health-related products, even if most of its sales are clothing. Whether that is accurate is exactly what a review is for.
What do the restrictions block?
Meta describes three levels, which can differ by category and by region. Core setup restricts the sharing of custom parameters and of the parts of URLs after the domain. Restrictions on certain standard events block specific mid and lower funnel events. Full restrictions block all events, in specific regions or everywhere.
Under full restrictions, the Meta Business Tools cannot be used for ads purposes where the restrictions apply. Custom events are also blocked automatically when your tools have data restrictions, until you review and confirm them, or they may not be available at all.
Example. A pharmacy site under event restrictions may see purchase events stop reaching Meta while page views still arrive. Its campaigns optimized for purchases lose the signal they learn from, which is why results can drop after a categorization.
| Level | What it blocks | What Meta suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Core setup | Custom parameters and URL parts after the domain | Most campaigns run as expected |
| Certain standard events | Some mid and lower funnel events | Use other events, such as upper funnel |
| Full restrictions | All events, in some or all regions | Awareness, Engagement or Traffic objectives |
Can you get your site out of the health and wellness category?
Sometimes. It depends on who assigned the category. If you categorized your dataset and data sources yourself, you can update the category in Events Manager without asking anyone. If Meta assigned it and you think it is not accurate, you can ask Meta to review it, and you will be notified of the decision by email.
What you cannot do is edit a Meta-assigned category yourself. Meta says so plainly: you can modify your own categorizations, but not one that Meta assigned. The review is the only route.
Be honest with yourself before you ask. If your site does sell health products or handle health information, the category is likely accurate, and the better path is to adapt your measurement and campaigns rather than wait for a removal.
- You set the category
- = edit it in Events Manager
- Meta set the category
- = request a review
- Meta’s decision
- = sent to you by email
- Category is accurate
- = adapt events and objectives
How do you request a review in Events Manager?
Go to Meta Events Manager, click Datasets, select your dataset, open the Settings tab and scroll to Manage data source categories. Click Manage, check your sources and their categories, then click View details on the source and Request review. A message confirms the request, and Meta emails its decision.
You need the right access first: full control of the business portfolio, or an admin role on the ad account that owns the dataset. If you do not have it, ask someone who does to add you or change your access.
If you do not see the Manage data source categories section at all, Meta explains that your data sources may not be in any category. If you already requested a review, View details shows where it stands.
- Events Manager, then Datasets
- Select your dataset, then the Settings tab
- Scroll to Manage data source categories, click Manage
- Click View details on the source
- Click Request review, then wait for Meta’s email
How do you keep campaigns running if the restriction stays?
Adapt to the level you are under, as Meta suggests. Under core setup, most campaigns should run as expected, with some limits. If certain standard events are restricted, look for alternative events that still serve your goal, such as upper funnel events, while making sure you share nothing prohibited.
Under full restrictions, Meta suggests campaign objectives that do not rely on data shared through the Business Tools: Awareness, for reach and impressions, Engagement, for likes, comments and shares, and Traffic, for link clicks.
Example. A telemedicine service that can no longer send sign-up events could run a Traffic campaign to its landing page, then judge success by the sign-ups it sees in its own systems rather than in Ads Manager.
Is this the same as Meta’s Health and Wellness ad policy?
No. The data source category is about what data your site sends to Meta. The Health and Wellness advertising policy is about what your ads say and show. Meta’s policy page lists claims it does not allow, and it requires targeting people aged 18 or older for some products.
Examples from that policy: no close-ups of pinched fat in weight loss ads, no negative statements about someone’s appearance, and no claims to cure diseases on its list, such as diabetes or cancer, even from health professionals. Weight loss supplements and cosmetic procedures can be advertised to people 18 or older.
A business can face both at once: a categorized website and rejected ads. They are fixed in different places. The category in Events Manager, the ads by changing the creative or requesting a review in Business Support Home.
How does Adwize help when your data is restricted?
Adwize cannot lift a Meta restriction, and nobody outside Meta can. What it does is read your Meta results every day and explain them in plain words, including when a drop matches a loss of events rather than a weaker ad. See the Optimize page.
When you rebuild around an objective that still works, such as Traffic or Awareness, Adwize prepares the campaign from one sentence and shows it to you before anything goes live. Nothing launches without your approval. See the Launch page.
Adwize works with Meta ads only, on Facebook and Instagram, inside your own ad account. It does not help anyone send data Meta does not allow.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my site is in the health and wellness category?
Meta says it informs you by email and with notifications in Events Manager. You can also check in Events Manager: Datasets, your dataset, Settings, then Manage data source categories. If that section is missing, your sources may not be in any category.
Can I remove the health and wellness category myself?
Only if you assigned it yourself, through self-categorization. A category assigned by Meta cannot be edited by you: you can only request a review, and Meta notifies you of its decision by email.
Who can request a review of a data source category?
Someone with full control of the business portfolio, or an admin role on the ad account that owns the dataset. Others need to ask a person with that access.
Which campaigns still work under full restrictions?
Meta suggests objectives that do not rely on data sent through its Business Tools: Awareness for reach and impressions, Engagement for likes, comments and shares, and Traffic for link clicks.
Can Adwize get my site out of the restriction?
No. Only Meta decides on a data source category. Adwize explains your results in plain words, proposes campaigns that fit what Meta still allows, and launches nothing until you approve.
