About Advantage+ audience: how Meta finds your buyers

Meta’s help article “About Advantage+ audience” only loads with JavaScript, so search engines and AI tools rarely see it. Here it is in plain words, with examples, from Meta’s help center as read on October 9, 2026.

Advantage+ audience, also called Audience with Advantage+ on, lets Meta’s AI find the audience for your campaign instead of you building it by hand. It learns from signals such as your past conversions, Meta Pixel data and how people interacted with your previous ads, and it keeps adjusting as it learns. Meta reports that it could lower the cost per result by 14.8% for Awareness, 9.7% for Traffic, Engagement and Leads, and 7.2% for Sales and App promotion. Meta recommends A/B testing it for almost every campaign type, except retargeting. You keep control with two settings: audience controls, which are hard limits such as locations, minimum age, languages and excluded audiences, and audience suggestions, which tell the AI where to start. Campaigns in a Special Ad Category, such as housing, employment, financial products or politics, cannot use it. For sales, leads and app campaigns, Meta points to Advantage+ campaigns as the fuller option.

TL;DR

  • Advantage+ audience lets Meta’s AI find your audience from signals like past conversions, Pixel data and ad interactions.
  • Meta reports possible cost per result drops of 14.8% (Awareness), 9.7% (Traffic, Engagement, Leads) and 7.2% (Sales, App promotion).
  • Meta recommends A/B testing it for almost all campaigns, except retargeting.
  • Audience controls stay hard limits. Suggestions only guide the AI. Special Ad Category campaigns can’t use it.
  • Adwize prepares the audience with your campaign and waits for your approval before anything runs.

What is Advantage+ audience?

Advantage+ audience is Meta’s AI targeting option. Instead of picking interests, ages and lookalikes yourself and hoping they work, you let Meta’s advanced AI find the people most likely to respond. In Ads Manager it may appear as Audience with Advantage+ on.

You still give it direction. When you create a campaign with Advantage+ audience, you set audience controls, which are hard limits, and you can add audience suggestions, which are hints. The AI looks for your audience inside the limits, starting from your hints.

It is one of Meta’s single-step Advantage+ tools: it automates the audience and leaves the rest of the campaign, such as budget, placements and creative, under your control.

How does Advantage+ audience find people?

Meta’s AI uses many pieces of information to find your audience, and keeps evolving as it learns. Meta names three examples: your past conversions, your Meta Pixel data and people’s interactions with your previous ads. Its latest models analyze millions of signals to match the message, the audience and the moment.

In practice, the quality of what you feed it matters. A Pixel that records purchases correctly gives the AI real buyers to learn from. A Pixel that misses half the purchases teaches it the wrong lesson.

Example. A coffee subscription brand has 800 recorded purchases in its Pixel. With Advantage+ audience, Meta can look for people who behave like those buyers, even if they never showed an interest in coffee that a manual targeting would have caught.

That is also why it needs time. The more conversions a campaign records, the more the AI has to learn from.

Past conversions
= who bought before
Meta Pixel data
= what people did on your site
Ad interactions
= who engaged with past ads
Your audience controls
= where the AI may search
What Advantage+ audience learns from, as Meta lists it, and the fence you set around it.

How much cheaper can results get with Advantage+ audience?

Meta publishes three figures on its help page. Campaigns with the Awareness objective could get a 14.8% lower cost per result. Traffic, Engagement and Leads could get 9.7% lower. Sales and App promotion could get 7.2% lower. Meta uses the word could: these are possible gains, not promises.

Read them as averages from Meta, not as a forecast for your account. Your own results depend on your offer, your creative, your budget and the data your Pixel sends.

Example. If your cost per purchase is $40 today, a 7.2% drop would bring it to about $37.10. Worth testing, but only a test on your own account tells you whether you get it.

When should you use Advantage+ audience, and when not?

Meta recommends A/B testing Advantage+ audience for almost all campaign types. The one exception it names is retargeting. If your campaign is meant to reach only people who already visited your site or bought from you, keep a classic custom audience instead of handing the search to the AI.

The second limit is regulatory. Campaigns in a Special Ad Category, which covers ads within Meta’s policies on financial products and services, employment and housing, plus ads about social issues, elections and politics, do not have access to Advantage+ audience.

For everything else, prospecting especially, the default advice from Meta is to test it against your current targeting rather than assume either side wins.

How do you keep control over who sees your ads?

With audience controls. They are the hard limits Advantage+ audience never crosses: locations, minimum age, languages and custom audiences to exclude. For locations, Meta will not go beyond your selection unless you tick Reach more people likely to respond to your ads.

Audience suggestions are softer. You can suggest age, gender, detailed targeting and custom or lookalike audiences to include. Meta starts with them, then reaches other people when it expects better results, still inside your controls. If you suggest women, men can still see your ad.

If a suggestion must be strict, Meta lets you further limit your audience and turn age, gender, detailed targeting or custom audience inclusions into controls, at the cost of less room for the AI. And if some people should never see any ad from your account, use the ad account settings.

Should you use Advantage+ audience or an Advantage+ campaign?

For campaigns with the Sales, Leads or App promotion objective, Meta recommends Advantage+ campaigns, its more complete solution that applies AI across many steps of the campaign. Advantage+ audience is the alternative when you want AI to find the audience but do not want to automate everything else.

Meta frames it as a matter of how much you want to share and how much you want to hand over. With Advantage+ audience, you still bring your knowledge of your customers through suggestions, and you keep the other settings in your hands.

A simple rule: if you trust Meta with the whole campaign, try an Advantage+ campaign. If you want to keep budget, placements and creative choices, start with Advantage+ audience only.

How do you test Advantage+ audience properly?

Run an A/B test, as Meta recommends: one version with your current targeting, one with Advantage+ audience, and nothing else different. Same budget, same creative, same objective, same dates. Then compare the cost per result once both versions have had time to learn.

Avoid two traps. Do not change the creative at the same time, or you will not know which change made the difference. And do not stop the test after two days because one side looks better: early results swing a lot.

Keep your audience controls identical in both versions. Otherwise you are not testing the AI, you are testing two different markets.

  1. Duplicate your current campaign
  2. Turn on Advantage+ audience in one version only
  3. Keep budget, creative, objective and controls identical
  4. Let both versions learn before you judge
  5. Compare cost per result, then keep the winner
A clean A/B test, the way Meta recommends testing Advantage+ audience.

Frequently asked questions

Is Advantage+ audience the same as broad targeting?

Not exactly. Advantage+ audience uses Meta’s AI and signals such as past conversions, Pixel data and ad interactions to find people, inside the audience controls you set. You can also add suggestions to tell it where to start.

Can I exclude people with Advantage+ audience?

Yes. Custom audiences to exclude are one of the four audience controls, with locations, minimum age and languages. Your ads never reach people outside these controls.

Should I use Advantage+ audience for retargeting?

No. Meta recommends A/B testing Advantage+ audience for almost all campaign types except retargeting. For retargeting, keep a custom audience of people who already know you.

Why can’t I turn on Advantage+ audience?

If your campaign is in a Special Ad Category, for financial products and services, employment, housing, or social issues, elections and politics, Advantage+ audience is not available. Those campaigns follow narrower audience rules.

Does Adwize turn on Advantage+ audience without asking?

No. Adwize shows you the audience it proposes, with every setting in plain words, and waits for your approval. It does not launch, change or spend anything until you say yes.
