An ad account spending limit is a cap you set on the total amount your Meta ad account can spend across all its campaigns, counted from the moment you set it. It is a lifetime cap, not a monthly one: the amount spent does not reset on its own at the end of the month, although some accounts may see an option to reset it automatically on the 1st. The limit does not change delivery or performance. When spending reaches it, your ads pause and the account stops spending, while Ads Manager still lists them as active. To restart, you change the limit, remove it, or reset the amount spent to $0. Only an admin of the ad account can do this, in Payment settings, and each change takes about 15 minutes. Accounts that pay with available funds cannot set a spending limit at all.

TL;DR

  • A spending limit caps what your whole ad account can spend, across all campaigns, from the day you set it.
  • It does not reset by itself each month. Some accounts may get an automatic reset on the 1st.
  • When you hit it, ads pause but still show as active in Ads Manager.
  • Change, remove or reset it in Payment settings. You must be an admin. It takes about 15 minutes.
  • Adwize shows every budget in plain words before launch and waits for your approval.

What is an ad account spending limit?

It is a ceiling on the total money your ad account can spend, across every campaign it runs, starting from the moment you set it. Meta calls it a flexible lifetime cap. Its job is to keep your total ad spend inside the budget you planned, whatever happens inside each campaign.

It sits above your campaign and ad set budgets. A budget tells Meta how much to spend on one campaign or ad set. The account spending limit is a safety net on top of all of them: once the account reaches it, everything stops.

Meta is clear that the limit does not affect how your ads are delivered or how they perform. It only decides when spending must stop.

Who can set a spending limit, and when can’t you?

You must be an admin of the ad account to create, change or reset the limit. Any change, including creating the limit, takes about 15 minutes to apply. And if your ad account is set up to pay with available funds, the prepaid balance, you cannot set an account spending limit at all.

There is one more rule. The limit you enter cannot be lower than what the account has already spent toward it. If Meta rejects your amount as invalid, enter a higher limit, or reset the amount spent to $0 first and then set the new one.

When you change the limit, Meta asks you to confirm in a final step, and it may ask you to re-enter your password.

How do you set an ad account spending limit?

Go to your Payment settings. In the Account spending limit section, click Options, then Set limit. Enter the amount you want, click Save, then click Done to confirm. The limit takes effect in about 15 minutes, and you can then follow the amount spent toward it in the same Payment settings page.

Example. A shop plans to spend $1,500 on Meta ads this quarter across three campaigns. It sets an account spending limit of $1,500. If a budget is raised by mistake, the account still stops at $1,500 instead of running past the plan.

When eligible, Meta’s opportunity score can also suggest a spending limit. Meta notes that the score itself does not reflect or guarantee your actual or future performance.

  1. Open Payment settings
  2. Find Account spending limit
  3. Click Options, then Set limit
  4. Enter the amount, click Save
  5. Click Done, wait about 15 minutes
The steps from Meta’s help page. Only an admin of the ad account can set the limit.

What happens when you reach the limit?

All your ads pause and the account stops spending. Meta sends you a notification about the pause. The trap is in Ads Manager: your ads are still listed as active, so a quick look at the table can make you think they are running when they are not delivering at all.

To restart right away, you have three options: change the limit, remove it, or reset the amount spent toward it. Meta’s own example is a $100 limit set at the start of the month to match a monthly budget. Spending climbs until it hits $100, every ad pauses, and you adjust, remove or reset to continue.

So if delivery stops across the whole account at once, check the spending limit before you touch any campaign.

How do you change the spending limit?

Open Payment settings from Ads Manager, scroll to the Account spending limit section and click Options. Click Change, enter the new limit, click Save, then Done. The new limit applies in about 15 minutes, and your ads start running again if they were paused because of the old one.

Changing the limit does not erase what you have already spent. The amount already counted toward the old limit carries over to the new one. If you spent $900 under a $1,000 limit and raise it to $1,500, you have $600 left, not $1,500.

If Meta shows an error about too many changes to your spending limit, wait about an hour before you try again.

Already spent
= $900
Old limit
= $1,000
New limit
= $1,500
Left to spend
= $600
Changing the limit keeps the amount already spent. Only a reset brings it back to $0.

How do you reset the amount spent toward the limit?

Resetting brings the amount spent back to $0 while the limit itself stays the same. Go to Payment settings, find the Account spending limit section, click Options, then pick the reset option. Meta’s reset page describes it under Remove or Change. The count returns to $0 in about 15 minutes, and ads start again.

Meta notes that this can be done from a computer, and that the reset option is not available when you have $0 spent toward the limit.

Some accounts may also see an option to reset the limit automatically on the 1st of every month, on top of the lifetime limit you reset by hand. Without it, nothing resets on its own: the end of the month changes nothing.

Why did your ads pause before reaching the limit?

Because there is a second limit you do not set. If your ads pause without reaching your budget or your account spending limit, you may have hit your daily spending limit. Meta sets that one itself and resets it every day, so ads paused for this reason can deliver again the next day.

The two are easy to confuse. Your account spending limit is yours: you choose it, change it and reset it. The daily spending limit belongs to Meta. The article on a disabled ad account covers a different case, where the account itself is blocked.

Before raising anything, check which limit stopped you.

How does Adwize handle spending?

Adwize prepares your Meta campaigns from one sentence and shows every budget in plain words before launch: how much per day or in total, and on which campaign. You approve, edit or refuse. Nothing launches and nothing is spent without your yes. See the Launch page.

You can also write an alert in one sentence, for example: tell me when my account has spent most of this month’s envelope. Adwize then warns you in plain words instead of letting you find paused ads later. See the Automate page.

The spending limit itself stays in your Payment settings, under your control as admin. Adwize works with Meta ads only, inside your own ad account.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Meta account spending limit reset every month?

Not by default. It is a lifetime cap, and the amount spent does not reset at the end of the month. Some accounts may see an option to reset it automatically on the 1st of each month.

Why do my ads show as active when they are paused?

When the account reaches its spending limit, Meta pauses the ads and sends a notification, but Ads Manager still lists them as active. Check Payment settings to see the amount spent against the limit.

Can I set a limit lower than what I already spent?

No. The limit cannot be lower than the amount already spent toward it. Enter a higher amount, or reset the amount spent to $0 first.

Why can’t I find the account spending limit option?

You need to be an admin of the ad account. And if the account pays with available funds, the prepaid balance, Meta does not offer an account spending limit.

Does Adwize change my spending limit?

No. The limit stays in your Payment settings. Adwize shows budgets in plain words before launch, can warn you with a one-sentence alert, and waits for your approval before any change.
